Irish Tinwhistle Lessons

The tinwhistle, or pennywhistle, is a great way to introduce yourself to traditional music. This instrument is inexpensive, (under $10 at most music stores), portable, and relatively easy to learn to play.

Once you have mastered the basics of whistle playing, you may find that you want to invest in a well crafted whistle, which could cost from $200, upwards to $500. Also, your whistle playing can be enhanced by adding techniques called ornaments. It is these ornaments which give Irish music its characteristic sound.

Recently, I taught whistle students at Fullerton Music, 121 Harbor Blvd. in Fullerton. In past years, I taught whistle workshops at the Sam-Fest, Summer Acoustic Music Festival, in Houston, Texas and the National Acoustic Music Festival in Iowa. I  offered whistle workshops at the Southern California Dulcimer Festival,  in Culver City, CA and the Music in the Mountains Festival, in Green Valley Lake, CA.  In 2019, I taught a whistle seminar at the Southern California Dulcimer Festival in Redondo Beach, CA.  This year, on Saturday, Sept. 25th, 2021, at 2 pm, I will be teaching an on-line whistle workshop through the Southern California Dulcimer Heritage.  Please check for details at:  www.scdh.org

The Bodhran- (pronounced bow-run)

The bodhran, which is an Irish hand drum has been used for a variety of purposes, both musical and non-musical.  In the old days, people replaced the head with a screen and used the drum as a grain sifter.  Other, larger versions, were used to communicate locations and call people to war.  More recent uses are far more peaceful, as the drum is used as a percussion instrument in Celtic bands.  Different tones can be achieved by moving the supporting hand up or down the drum head.  If you are interested in learning this drum, please contact me using the information above.
In addition to teaching private students, I will be teaching my next, on-line  Beginning Bodhran Class at the SCDH Festival, Saturday, September 25th, 2021 at 11 a.m.   Please go to www.SCDH.org for more details.
