The Bodhran-  Lesson # 2  Reel Variations-  Make Your Playing More Interesting.

1. Review hand placement on tipper, wrist position relative to drum head, muting hand, and reel beat.

2. Review reel variation.

Discuss OFFBEAT variations.-  Emphasizes count 3 instead of count 1.
1st Variation:  1 *  3  4
Note:  * = silent count:  move up or down parallel to the head but don’t strike the head.
2nd Variation:  1 * * 4
3rd Variation:  1   2 * 4

Ideas for further development:
  • a) playing to sound files on the computer or recording device.  Please see the BODHRAN TUTORIALS PAGE FOR HELPFUL LINKS.
  • b) finding “slow-down” apps, such as the Amazing Slow Downer for Apple.
  • c)  search YouTube for bodhran lessons to get new ideas for different patterns.
  • d) attempt to play along with your favorite CDs or video recordings.
  • e)  Combine variations.
4. Explore tonal possibilities by muting inside of the drum with the supporting hand.
