The tinwhistle, or pennywhistle, is a great way to introduce yourself to traditional music.  This instrument is inexpensive, (under $10 at most music stores), portable, and relatively easy to learn to play.

Once you have mastered the basics of whistle playing, you may find that you want to invest in a well crafted whistle, which could cost from $200, upwards to $500.  Also, your whistle playing can be enhanced by adding techniques called ornaments.  It is these ornaments which give Irish music its characteristic sound.

Presently,  I teach private whistle students at Fullerton Music, 121 Harbor Blvd. in Fullerton. In past years, I taught whistle workshops at the Sam-Fest, Summer Acoustic Music Festival, in Houston, Texas and the National Acoustic Music Festival in Iowa.  In 2011, I will be offering whistle workshops at the Southern California Dulcimer Festival, on Sept. 24th, in Culver City, CA and the Music in the Mountains Festival, in Green Valley Lake, CA on Saturday, July 30th, 2011.
